Classroom Rules:
On the first day of class, the students and I will spend a great deal of time developing a set of rules and consequences in which they will be expected to follow for the rest of the school year. I would like the students to help me develop the rules as I feel it will give them a sense of ownership in the classroom. This kind of rule development will also teach the students how to collaborate not only with one another, but with me as well. As the students come up with their rules, I will be sure to guide them in the right direction, providing specific and positively stated examples for them.

I also feel it is important for the students to help create their own rules because it will help give them a sense of how democracy works, which will be a very important theme within our classroom.

Once these rules are created after the first class, they will be available on this Wikispace under this section for both the parent's and the student's viewing.

We will keep these rules throughout the entire school year, but as a class, we will take special interest in them throughout the first few weeks of the year.

Consequences:
As the students will learn in my class, even democracy has its limits in the form of checks and balances. Although the students will help create the rules, I believe in having my own set of consequences. They are listed as followed:
  • First Offense - Verbal warning - I will discretely inform the student of their misbehavior as not to embarrass them in front of the class.
  • Second Offense - Time-owed after class - The student and I will spend time after class discussing the misbehavior and how he/she plans on fixing the problem.
  • Third Offense - Detention - Before or after school.
  • Fourth Offense - Family contact - If the behavior continues to this extent then I will contact a parent or guardian to get them involved so that we may work as a team to better the student's performance.
  • Fifth Offense - Office.
*Consequences for athletes: The coaches of this school want to see their athletes succeed not only in sports, but also in the classroom. I have the right to inform any coach of their athlete's misbehavior and progress in the classroom.

Tardies:
Students who are tardy to my class must be accompanied with a pass from another teacher or the office. If the student does not have a pass then they must sign a tardy log-in sheet located at the entrance of the classroom. Each student will be allowed two tardies before participation points will begin being deducted. *(If school allows participation points)
